Property Description

Built about 1830 by Nicholas Loisel (1781-1856), Loisel House is an architecturally and culturally significant Creole House on the banks of Bayou Teche. Completely updated in 2019, it offers the history of rural Louisiana along with all the creature comforts of modern life and plentiful storage. It has it all! Loisel is still in its 19th century setting with sugar cane fields visible all around. While no longer under operation, the commanding tall smokestack from the original sugar mill stands in the distance on the adjacent landowner's property, part of the borrowed scenery. The rear of the house faces Bayou Teche, which is navigable from this point on the bayou upstream toward New Iberia, and downstream to Flat Lake, Lake Palourde, and the Atchafalaya River on to the Gulf of Mexico. This magnificent setting provides endless recreational opportunities: picture yourself playing badminton, croquet, strolling down to watch the daily life of the bayou, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. In addition to the large living area with 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, the plentiful porches provide another 1,700 SF of outdoor space, accessible by no less than 9 exterior doors, creating space that flows seamlessly from indoors to out. Imagine having a large family gathering or special party where guests can come and go from your home outside to the porches, and into the surrounding 8 acres of lawn. The visionary owners have created a beautiful retreat out of a former barn: a freestanding bonus house, with full kitchen and bathroom. Want to get away from all the noise of modern life, just stroll out to your own private hideaway. This bonus structure would serve beautifully as an artist studio, a writer's getaway, or earn additional income advertising it as a Short Term Rental.
